My title today refers to the Cornelius Ryan novel of the same name that recounts a disastrous World War II operation, an attempt by allied forces to do an end run around the Germans by way of a massive airdrop in Holland. The objective was to capture and control the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem, a gateway into the industrial Ruhr and, as it turned out, “A Bridge Too Far.” It was a disaster with nearly 2000 killed and 6800 captured.
The Republican effort to tie a Continuing Resolution to the repeal of Obamacare is a”A Bridge Too Far.”
Kortsessions is not a political blog and I have tried very hard to not be political, so much as enlightening, in these posts. I only cite political rhetoric that is extremely incorrect and misrepresentative of the facts as I know them, rhetoric that promotes bad investment decisions.
Since rhetoric and talking points are all we are getting these days with the market and economy caught in the crossfire, I feel compelled to speak out. I do this not as a blind partisan, but as someone with a sense of what is reasonable and what is not.
“Compromise” is not a dirty word.
In the run-up to the October 1st government shut-down significant compromise was made.
Example:
President Obama submitted a 1.2 trillion dollar budget to Congress earlier this year. After negotiations between House Republicans, Democrats and the White House the final budget resolution that was agreed to be sent to the Senate with the Continuing Resolution was around $950 billion (very near the Paul Ryan Budget). Ergo, I’d say the Dems compromised a bit.
“Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” Albert Einstein
Since the Republican majority took over the House there have been Forty votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act. All passed the House and all were dead on arrival at the Senate. As they have attached the same rider to the Continuing Resolution, it too, was D.O.A. when it arrived on the Senate floor. This is insanity and a huge waste of the peoples’ time and money.
Does the Republican Party have a death wish?
It sure looks that way. It would be a great loss if the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower and many other responsible Americans is on its way to the dust bin of history. We need the steady, sensible hand of the loyal opposition. Instead, the Lunatic Fringe of the GOP is now driving the train. It is to be hoped that responsible, courageous members of the party will be able to take back control, or the Limbaugh-Fox News-Beck caucus will run it off the track.
Exit Questions:
Can you imagine where the economy would be today without this constant government by crisis?
Is the market right in assuming this to be a tale created by idiots,” full of sound and fury, signifying nothing?”
I encourage you to ponder the question and give me your comments.
